How to Safely Move Workout Equipment to Your New Home

How to Safely Move Workout Equipment to Your New Home

If you have a home gym, moving can be complicated. Careful planning and preparation can prevent damage to your equipment and your house and can make the process easier for both you and the movers.

Clean and Sanitize Equipment

Before you start packing boxes and loading the moving truck, thoroughly clean your workout equipment. You don’t want to bring sweat and germs into your new house. You also don’t want germs to get on furniture, boxes, and other things that will be packed in the moving truck along with your gym equipment.

Pack Small and Light Items First

Put things like yoga mats and free weights into boxes and storage bins first. That will free up some space and make it easier to deal with large equipment.

If you’re packing weights, wrap them in bubble wrap or another type of protective material. Use sturdy plastic bins, not cardboard boxes, and be careful not to overload them. When packing weights, it’s better to use a lot of small containers than to try to pack everything into a few larger ones.

Prepare Workout Machines for the Move

If you have a treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical, weight machine, or some other type of mechanical workout equipment, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to find out how to disassemble it and pack it up for the move. If you don’t have an owner’s manual for a piece of equipment, you can most likely find a copy online by searching for the company name and model number in a search engine.

Wrap workout machines with moving blankets, sheets, or towels so they don’t get scratched or dinged in transit. If there are any moving parts, use zip ties, rope, or bungee cords to secure them.

Use the Right Tools to Transport Machines

If you’re planning a DIY move with the help of family and friends, be careful when transporting workout equipment. Those machines are heavy, and they’re also awkwardly shaped, which makes them difficult to carry. Use a hand truck or dolly to make them easier to manage and prevent injuries. If you have to slide any type of equipment over the floor, place a sheet of cardboard under the machine so you don’t damage the floor.
