3 Tips for Packing Your Clothes Like a Pro

Packing for a move is a daunting task. People are often surprised by the amount of clothing they have and feel overwhelmed when they begin going through it and packing. Here are some tips to make the process more manageable.

Decide Which Clothes to Take with You and Which to Get Rid Of

You may have a lot of garments that no longer fit, that are out of style, that are damaged or stained, or that you simply don’t like anymore. Now is the time to get rid of them so you don’t pay to move clothes that you won’t wear. Go through each closet and dresser drawer, make a pile of clothes that you don’t want to take to your new home, and sell or donate them.

Pack Off-Season Clothes First

The sooner you begin packing your clothes, the better. Well in advance of your moving date, pack clothing that you won’t need soon. Getting that out of the way early will mean less stress later on. You can put your clothes in boxes or plastic storage bins or use vacuum seal bags to shrink them down and reduce the overall volume of the items that you’ll be moving.

Don’t Fold and Pack Everything

People often feel overwhelmed by the thought of folding and packing every garment they own, then unfolding everything and putting it away. You don’t have to do that.

If you’re moving a relatively short distance and your belongings will only be in the moving truck for a few hours, you don’t have to take clothes off hangers. You can group several garments together, slip a trash bag over them from the bottom, and tie it shut around the hangers. When you unpack at your new house, you’ll be able to simply hang the clothes in a closet and remove the bags.

For garments that you keep in drawers, you may be able to leave the clothes inside, pull the drawers out of the dresser, and stack the drawers in the moving truck. When you get to your new home, all you’ll have to do is slide the drawers back into the dresser.
